World Diabetes Day – 14 NOVEMBER

Every year on 14 NOVEMBER we celebrate World Diabetes Day. It was created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to raise awareness of this important and socially significant disease that millions of people around the world live with every day.

Diabetes is a disease associated with a reduced or missing ability of the body to produce the required amount of insulin, a hormone that controls glucose levels in the blood.

There are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 – autoimmune, which cannot be prevented and requires daily administration of insulin by injection or insulin pump
  • Type 2 – the predominant type (more than 90% of patients), which is treated by a combination of diet and exercise in combination with medication in tablet form.

You are at increased risk of prediabetes or diabetes:

  • IF you are overweight or obesep;
  • If you are over 45 years old;
  • You have a parent, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes;
  • IF you are physically active less than 3 times a week;
  • In ladies – you had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or had a baby weighing more than 4 kg.

The most common cluing symptoms of the condition are: increased thirst, frequent urination, including at night, unmotivated weight loss, intense cravings for sweet foods, blurred vision, numb fingers and toes, marked fatigue, very dry skin, or slow healing wounds, more infections than usual.

If you have any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor for testing your blood sugar

It is important to note that regular self-monitoring reduces diabetic complications by 35%. Regular check-ups with an endocrinologist or GP are extremely important. In patients with already diagnosed diabetes, periodic check-ups every 6 months, even more frequently, are important for good control of the disease and prevention of its complications.
