Although most of these types do not cause symptoms in most people, some types can cause warts and others lead to cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer in women.

There are approximately 43 known types of sexually transmitted HPV, of which 18 have proven oncogenic potential. HPV are a major contributor to the development of cervical cancer.
