MYCOPLASMA PNEUMONIAE

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a contagious respiratory infection that spreads easily on contact with infected aerosols.

When an infected person coughs or sneezes, moisture containing Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria is released into the air. Uninfected people in their environment can easily inhale the bacteria. Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes illness by damaging the lining of the respiratory system (nose, throat, breathing tube, and lungs). Infections with Mycoplasma pneumoniae have a prolonged incubation period. This is the time from infection of the organism to the appearance of the first clinical signs of disease. Symptoms of mycoplasma pneumoniae appear and worsen over a period of 1 to 4 weeks. The most common manifestation of the disease is tracheobronchitis. Symptoms include:

  • sore throat;
  • fatigue;
  • fever;
  • headache;
  • a slowly worsening cough that can last for weeks or months.

Children under the age of 5 often do not have fever, but wheezing, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur.

Early diagnosis is difficult as there are few unusual symptoms. As mycoplasmal pneumonia progresses, laboratory tests may be able to diagnose it.

CHLAMYDIA PNEUMONIAE

Chlamydia is a bacteria that is usually sexually transmitted. However, there are other types of bacteria within the genus Chlamydia, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae). This strain is spread by respiratory droplets and usually causes sinusitis, bronchitis, pharyngitis and pneumonia. Chlamydia pneumoniae causes respiratory infections that most often begin by affecting the upper respiratory tract, but the causative agent subsequently affects the lungs.

The incubation period lasts 3-4 weeks, after which symptoms develop gradually. In the beginning, general malaise begins, combined with irritation in the larynx and trachea. There is a prolonged dry cough, body temperature rises with possible values of 39-40 degrees. Patients complain of a feeling of chills, headache, as well as muscle and joint pain. Radiological examination proves the presence of interstitial pneumonia. The presence of inflammatory changes affecting the pleura is also often reported.

Chlamydia trachomatis

Chlamydia Trachomatis – infection occurs sexually. The most common sexually transmitted infection. Causes urethritis, joint disease, affects the eyes, inflammation of the fallopian tubes, etc. Can lead to infertility. Children born to mothers with chlamydial infection may develop keratitis (inflammation of the cornea of the eyes) or pneumonia. Incubation period 20 days.

Being researched:

Chlamydia Trachomatis IgA – tested in the acute phase of the disease and when joints are affected.
Chlamydia Trachomatis IgM – tested in the acute phase of the disease
Chlamydia Trachomatis IgG – tested in chronic infections and retained for 2-3 years after infection.
In addition to the sexual organs, in some cases the eyes, joints, liver and lungs are affected. In men, the urethra is mainly affected by the inflammatory process. Complaints are scanty, mainly from the presence of a minute amount of whitish discharge from the penis, mainly in the morning. Complaints may be absent in 40% of cases. In females the infection is often asymptomatic, or there is the presence of more profuse vaginal discharge.

Infectious mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is a clinical syndrome characterized by a mandatory combination of:

  • Temperature – prolonged high temperatures;
  • Angina – severely inflamed, hypertrophic tonsils, often with fibrinous deposits on them;
  • Generalized lymphadenopathy – enlarged lymph nodes all over the body, most especially in the cervical region;
  • Characteristic changes in the blood count;- In 90% of cases, the causative agent is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)/very rarely, the cause may also be cytomegalovirus (CMV),EBV is very widespread. Antibodies can be detected in about 90% of the population. On the one hand, the virus is shed for a long time after illness (up to about 6 months, after the first symptoms appear), but on the other hand, very close contact is needed for infection (use of shared utensils, towels, kissing, etc.). After infection, the virus remains dormant in the epithelial cells of the oropharynx and B-lymphocytes. Antibodies can be detected in about 90% of the population. Cytomegalovirus

Cytomegalovirus belongs to the group of herpes viruses. The virus is widespread: antibodies to it are isolated in 10-15% of teenagers and in 40% of adults. Cytomegalovirus infection is not always recognised. The incubation period after infection is up to 60 days. During this period it is possible that the infection does not manifest itself at all, after which there is a general decline in immunity and stress.

Cytomegalovirus infection is often taken for acute respiratory illness or acute respiratory viral infection because of similar symptoms – fever, weakness, headache, prolonged fever. Complications such as pneumonias, arthritis, encephalitis, etc. are also possible with cytomegalovirus infection.

Cytomegalovirus strikes many different organs. It can cause inflammation of the liver, spleen, adrenal glands, organs of the urogenital tract, as well as allergic reactions, rash, itching. Because of the decreased immunity, cytomegalovirus infection is a cause of frequent illness from respiratory and other diseases. A peculiarity of cytomegalovirus infection is increased salivation. The blood vessels of the eyes may be affected. In women, the virus affects the uterus, cervix, in men – the urethra and testicles.
