Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough, pertussis or whooping cough)
An acute infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused by Bordetella pertussis. The disease is transmitted by the air-drop route. It also affects adults, but young children and adolescents are mainly susceptible.
The incubation period of the disease is 1-2 weeks after infection, and by the 40th day, patients are contagious. It begins with a mild, gradually increasing dry cough, accompanied by weakness and fever. Gradually, the cough becomes paroxysmal with the patient unable to draw breath during the attack. The eyes become red, the lips and tongue turn blue.
After the end of the coughing fit, the patient secretes stringy light sputum.
The severity of the disease is determined by the frequency and duration of coughing attacks, with more severe attacks accompanied by vomiting.
Complications can affect infants and young children, the most serious of which is bronchopneumonia.
Once pertussis is contracted, patients build immunity to the causative agents of the disease over a period of 10-12 years.
