The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Its area is 1.5-2 m2 and is 2 mm thick. The skin is the protective covering of the human body. It protects against the penetration of microorganisms and other particles from the environment, thermal effects, light and injuries. Skin also participates in the regulation of body temperature, is part of the system of touch, is a reservoir of water, fats and vit. D.

The skin has a variety of functions:

Protective – protects the body from ultraviolet radiation, water loss, penetration of microorganisms and mechanical trauma;
Sensory – sensation of touch, pressure, pain and temperature;
Thermoregulatory – storing or releasing heat depending on body temperature;
Immunological – the skin is part of the immune system;
Secretory – secretion of sebum (secretion from the sebaceous glands);
Hormonal – vitamin production.
