What is food intolerance?

Food intolerance or intolerance is a slow-onset reaction by the body to certain foods that are part of the daily diet. It results from the formation of specific IgG antibodies to foods or their ingredients. These antibodies form complexes with proteins from the food that accumulate in various tissues of the body and cause inflammatory processes. Unlike an allergic reaction to food, in which case the reaction to the allergen is rapid and aggressive, in food intolerance the reaction is slow and long-lasting, without the risk of a serious allergic reaction.

Differences between food allergy and food intolerance:

Food allergy:

  • Instant reaction (up to 2 hours after consumption);
  • It is rarely caused by more than 1-2 foods;
  • The most commonly affected are the skin, respiratory and urinary systems;
  • A minute amount of the allergen can cause a reaction, even after a long period during which it is not taken;
  • Caused by elevated IgE antibodies.

Food intolerance:

  • Reaction up to 72 hours after food intake;
  • Different foods can give a reaction;
  • Any organ or system can react;
  • Symptoms may subside and reduce in intensity after stopping a particular food for a period and feeding on a regimen thereafter.
  • Caused by elevated IgG antibodies.

Why should I get a blood test for food intolerances?

This test allows for changes in diet and therapy of various diseases. After a proper and systematic approach and diet for gradual adaptation and treatment of these eating disorders, patients return to their usual diet of healthy people.
