How can you distinguish stress from burnout?

Stress is a normal part of life that every one of us experiences at one time or another. It is your body’s natural reaction to external pressures. It can arise from a variety of sources, such as task deadlines, financial problems, interpersonal issues and health ones. Although unpleasant, it can also serve as a motivator, pushing you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
Stress, however, is only meant to be a short-term stimulus, not something we experience constantly. It is part of our daily lives and we need mechanisms to manage it so that it does not progress to chronic stress and potentially to burnout. One key difference between stress and burnout is their intensity and duration. It is often characterised by a temporary feeling of tension accompanied by symptoms such as irritability, difficulty concentrating and sleep disturbances. It can be managed by adopting healthy self-care practices such as exercise, healthy eating, relaxation techniques and seeking social support. When you are stressed and doing something to manage it, you can restore your energy by taking time to rest and renew. In contrast, burnout is characterized by a constant feeling of emotional and physical exhaustion, and it doesn’t matter how much you rest – you still feel drained and will have trouble completing even the simplest tasks

The most fashionable syndrome in the present time – Burnout. Mental, emotional, physical and professional exhaustion – this is the shortest and perhaps the most accurate definition of burnout syndrome. It’s also called professional burnout syndrome, but you get the idea that it’s complex burnout. It is not just the professional aspect that can suffer a breakdown, because the problem is personal.

It is found in people engaged in a variety of professions – doctors, managers, lawyers, teachers, etc. The professional burnout syndrome, as its name suggests, brings with it a loss of a sense of fulfillment, usefulness, and satisfaction with accomplishments, a deficit of energy and ideas, chronic fatigue, apathy, a high level of criticality, feelings of guilt and hopelessness, irritability, loss of patience and tolerance, and reduced performance and concentration.

Through the tests it is possible to determine the current stress load on the body, all the important hormones and neurotransmitters involved.

  • Serotonin: a signaling substance responsible for the mood/happiness hormone
  • Dopamine: increases concentration and motivation
  • Noradrenaline: guides the agility of the mind
  • Adrenaline: stress hormone
  • Cortisol: hormone of activity and stress
