ANTI – BORDETELLA PERTUSSIS (PERTUSSIS)- ANTIBODIES
Whooping cough, caused by the gram-negative bacterium Bordetella pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is particularly severe in young infants. It is also known as ‘whooping cough’.
Whooping cough is transmitted by the airborne route – sneezing and coughing, and the carrier may not have symptoms. It is most easily transmitted in closed collectives and confined spaces.
Symptoms usually start 7 to 10 days after infection, but may appear after 3 weeks.
Initially, the symptoms resemble those of the common cold – sneezing, runny nose, mild fever and a mild cough.
The most common complications affect the respiratory tract and central nervous system. It is possible to develop pneumonia, middle ear infection, loss of appetite, dehydration, seizures, short-term respiratory arrest. In severe forms of pertussis due to impaired oxygen supply, cerebral haemorrhages may occur which may lead to brain damage or death.
Although the primary prevention strategy for pertussis is vaccination, it can affect people of any age, including vaccinated adolescents and adults. In order to assess the severity of pertussis and the efficacy of the vaccine, diagnosis and epidemiological surveillance based on accurate and valid diagnostic methods should be conducted.
The antibody test guides the specialist whether the patient has recently been in contact with pertussis.
