19 MAY – EUROPEAN ANTI-OBESITY DAY
Today, obesity has been described as the “epidemic of the 21st century”. The European Day against Obesity is celebrated every year on 19 May.
In most cases, obesity is associated with increased consumption of high-energy foods on the one hand and decreased energy expenditure on the other. This leads to the accumulation of excess fat tissue in the body.Weight control is not just about losing weight, but about gaining control.Prevention of obesity can start at any age and is a guarantee of better health and quality of life.
The campaign was founded in 2009 by the UK National Obesity Forum and the Belgian Association of Obese Patients.
The mission of the European Day against Obesity is to create a healthier European population by significantly reducing the number of EU citizens with disease and premature death.
Obesity is the result of a disturbed energy balance – the ratio between the energy value of food and a person’s energy expenditure. A key condition for achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight is a good balance between energy expenditure during physical activity and energy intake with food.Obesity is a disease that is caused by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in the human body.
To avoid obesity, doctors advise:
– Take food with an energy value that matches your energy expenditure;
– Eat frequently and moderately (divide meals into 3 main meals with 2-3 snacks in between and reduce portion sizes);
– Increase fruit and vegetable consumption; eat pulses and cereals regularly. These products are poor in fat and rich in dietary fibre, which increases food volume and enhances the feeling of satiety;
– Avoid spicy condiments and salt;
– Drink at least 1.5 litres of water and fluids daily;
– Reduce your consumption of fat and alcohol as they are high in calories;
– Limit your consumption of confectionery and baked goods (pastries, cakes, chocolate desserts, pies, etc.) as they contain high amounts of fat in addition to carbohydrates;
– Get moving daily by walking or light exercise.
