14 November – World Diabetes Day

09.11.2023Uncategorized

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels due to a partial reduction or impaired action of insulin (type 2 diabetes) or complete loss of its production in the body (type 1 diabetes).

Type 1 diabetes mellitus in a large percentage of cases is an autoimmune disease. It has serious symptoms, weight loss, increased fluid secretion, possible feeling of weakness, faintness, and leads to a state of ketoacidosis – very high blood sugar values, in which one is admitted to hospital.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes and is associated with lifestyle risk factors: overweight, obesity, unhealthy diet, reduced physical activity and alcohol abuse. By changing people’s behaviour and daily habits, i.e. reducing risk factors, it is possible to prevent 70% of cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus!

High blood sugar levels can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and major blood vessels and cause complications such as vision loss, amputations and kidney failure.

Attention should be paid to the prevention of this disease or to the correct treatment of an already occurring one, and it consists in:

  • following a proper healthy diet;
  • adherence to an environmentally friendly lifestyle;
  • physical activity, movement, sports in nature;
  • avoiding overweight;
  • avoiding alcohol abuse and smoking;
  • regular control of diabetes and proper treatment of any complications that may arise.
