13 October – World Thrombosis Day

09.10.2024Uncategorized

World Thrombosis Day started to be celebrated in 2014, and the aim is to give more visibility and clarity on this quite often overlooked condition. The date 13 October was chosen because it is the birth date of Rudolf Virchow, a German physician, pathologist and anthropologist who developed the concept of thrombosis. It can occur in any of us, but most often we do not pay attention to the symptoms, and they can lead to very serious health problems.

The D-dimer test is a blood test that shows if blood clots are actively forming anywhere in the vascular system. It measures the amount of a protein called fibrin D-dimer in the blood. Fibrin D-dimer is produced whenever fibrin (a protein that is the main component of a blood clot) is actively being broken down somewhere in the vascular system. This test is most often useful in diagnosing pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, but it can also be useful in diagnosing other medical conditions in which blood clots play a role.

For this study it is of utmost importance to be done at the appropriate time of diagnosis or treatment of the disease, and this occurs at the discretion of the treating physician.
